Journey of discovery

Christoph Brech – Passage

The scene is reminiscent of an empty stage. Only a glass of water, illuminated from behind, is the focus of attention. Roaring and hammering sounds accompany the video work Passage by Christoph Brech. In addition, there is an almost rhythmic noise, difficult to classify. The water in the glass vibrates to the tonus of the sound. The waterline reflects the movements of the surrounding area, swaying from left to right, from front to back.

The artist made this recording during a journey on a container ship. We are hear the diesel engine and the waves, and we are see the movements of the ocean. The course of the journey, defined by the distance traveled and the time passed, is condensed solely into the movement of the waterline and the changing sunlight. Blanking out all the typical means of orientation gives the journey a meditative quality. A journey of transition.
