Journey of discovery

I have decided to travel less in the future, but to take more time for each individual trip.

Interview with Christoph Brech

Let’s play “I see something you don’t see…”.  – What do you see when you travel?

Passage is a good example to answer the question. I traveled on a container ship from Genoa to Montreal in April 2003. The North Atlantic Passage can still be very stormy at that time of year. We also passed through a storm low with very high waves that rocked the ship back and forth. In the morning while taking a shower, I made the following observation: the water in the shower tray collected first on one side, then on the other, only to return to the first side after a short time. It moved synchronously to the wave movements of the ocean. I wanted to make this observation visible in a glass filled with water. That’s how Passage came into being.

How do you perceive differently? Is your approach to the journey meditative?

I would not describe it as meditative. However, I choose the means of transport for a journey consciously each time. If, for example, I travel for 13 days as the only passenger on a container ship, I naturally perceive differently than on a flight that takes me to the same destination in eight hours.

What does time mean to you? Should we travel more consciously?

For me, as probably for most people, time is a precious good that is not available in unlimited quantities. I can’t give a universal answer to the question of whether we should travel more consciously. I have decided to travel less in the future, but to take more time for each individual trip.

Who travels more – you or your art?

At the moment, due to Corona, certainly my art.
