Hiroyuki Masuyama im Interview

You “conserve” moments, always photographing with the awareness that it is only an image of space and time. How did you experience your trip around the world?

During the flight around the world, I took a photo every 20 seconds. I counted the time myself, without a clock or automatic recording. It’s not empirical, it’s experiential. Art is an experience to me.

Weltreise: Frankfurt – Bangkok – Tokyo – Honolulu – Los Angeles – New York – Frankfurt, © Hiroyuki Masuyama

Where was your last flight to?

To Venice, Italy.

Has your feeling about air travel changed over the years?

I disappear and become one with the blue sky. That was my impression when I first flew and I still have that feeling today.

How do you look at the world from above?

It feels like connecting with the world as an experience rather than seeing it. There is no time and space. It’s a very peaceful landscape.
