Journey of discovery
Mareike Foecking – I am looking at Silicon Valley – Silicon Valley is looking at Me
I am looking at Silicon Valley – Silicon Valley is looking at Me is the result of a several-week stay of the photographer Mareike Foecking in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. It is the result of a quest that follows past, present, and future traces. In countless encounters, conversations, and field trips, “the woman with the Hasselblad” immerses deeply into a region that is one of the most influential locations of the IT and high-tech industry.
San Francisco used to be known as a place of longing, where the hippie movement culminated with the Summer of Love in 1967, now its city life is characterized by the use of legal drugs delivered via courier and its exploding real estate prices. However, a subculture is being established in Silicon Valley, which constitutes a complete contrast to the clean and purely digital clichés in our imagination: game nights, conscious eating, and books that offer new insights. With her expansive installation, Foecking creates a multilayered stage for the altered cityscape.
